How to Qualify
All Canadian artists, producers, and composers are encouraged to become members and register music through our registration process.  Only music that has met the CRTC definitions of Canadian content will be included.

In Public Notice 1998-41, the Canadian Radio, Television, and Telecommunications Commission set out the definition for Canadian Music creating what has become known as the MAPL system.  A musical selection must generally meet at least two of the five criteria set out below in order to qualify as a Canadian selection.

M (music) - the music is composed entirely by a Canadian.

A (artist) - the music is, or the lyrics are, performed principally by a Canadian.

P (production) - The musical selection consists of a live performance that is recorded wholly in Canada, or performed wholly in Canada and broadcast live in Canada.

L (lyrics) - The lyrics are entirely written by a Canadian.

The music selection was performed live or recorded after 1 September 1991, and a Canadian who has collaborated with a non-Canadian receives at least half of the credit as a composer and lyricist.

There are three special cases where a musical selection may qualify as Canadian, even if it satisfies fewer than two of the MAPL criteria.  An instrumental performance of a musical composition written or composed entirely by a Canadian, a performance of a musical composition that a Canadian has composed for instruments only, and a musical selection that has already qualified as a Canadian selection under previous regulations, are all deemed to be Canadian selections.

Process by which to Register Music in the Database
A selection may be registered in the Catalogue by a member by filling in the fields and following the prompts found in the Artists, Albums and Tracks sections. Accuracy and completeness of the entry will greatly speed the time of processing and assure that the data are quickly placed into the online catalogue.

All submissions will be reviewed by the Database manager to ensure the completeness of the information and accuracy of the MAPL criteria. Please allow 48 hours for information to be posted.
