| Artist Details | Phil Dwyer studied at the Banff Jazz Workshop at 16 and with Steve Grossman in New York City a year later. He established his Canadian jazz reputation in the Hugh Fraser Quintet and Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisers (VEJI) before moving to Toronto in 1989 to become a fixture in that city's busy studio scene, recording commercials, film soundtracks and pop discs, as well as playing with Latin and R&B bands and jazz musicians like Renee Rosnes and Randy Brecker. Dwyer backed stars like Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole and The Temptations, and continues to play in and serve as musical director of the Sax Summit, a showcase for Canada's greatest saxophonists. Dwyer has won several Juno Awards including one with bassist Dave Young for Fables and Dreams and another with flugelhornist Guido Basso for Lost in the Stars. Dwyer is currently teaching at Malaspina University-College near his home in Qualicum Beach, B.C. "Let Me Tell You About My Day refers to a day in which manic psychosis sort of dictated the flow of events in my life," Dwyer explained. "Birthdays, real-estate deals, brass quintets, yoga, Chateau Lynch-Bages, and hospitals played a part in this most unusual day. The title is borrowed from a great line by guitarist John Abercrombie at a gig in Toronto several years ago." Let Me Tell You About My Day also reflects the love and respect the musicians share for the jazz tradition and for each other. It is an inspired and inspiring collection of powerful performances. It's great jazz! |
